Your Gateway to The Infinite: Flow State
Before we start
Hey,
Before I start this letter, I want to remind you that it only contains concepts and my interpretations of a vast and complex topic. I only provide one way to understand.
Please keep an open mind and let’s dive into today’s letter.
P.S. I’ve opened up a community with my friend, which I think will be valuable to you. I’ll provide a link soon :)
An Intro to Flow
“The best moments in our lives, are not the passive receptive, relaxing times—although such experiences can also be enjoyable, if we have worked hard to attain them. The best moments usually occur when a person’s body or mind is stretched to its limits in a voluntary effort to accomplish something difficult and worthwhile.”
Flow state occurs when you focus so hard on a task or activity that everything else ceases to exist and your consciousness begins to merge with the task at hand.
Flow transforms work into play.
When you enter flow, nothing else matters. When you enter flow, time itself begins to behave differently. When you enter flow, you play with the universe directly. You touch The Infinite with your mind. When you enter flow, you become your work and work becomes play.
In other words, my friend, you lock the fuck in.
Direct Access to The Infinite
Chances are, if you don’t have some type of flow state in your life, you aren’t very happy.
Learning how to use flow state to your advantage; to push yourself to new heights, is a tricky skill, one that I’m going to be learning a lot about in the next few weeks and months.
But what is flow and how do you access it?
Firstly, understand that the conscious mind never creates something new. It can only build houses on existing bricks. But the subconscious mind can transfer new information from The Infinite to the conscious mind.
The subconscious can get the ingredients to build the house, but can’t build it.
The conscious can build the house but can’t get the ingredients directly.
But, how does intuition relate to this? Intuition can be described as the voice of the subconscious mind. The voice of the heart. The gut feeling from beyond.
I believe intuition is not our own, but something we all have access to. It’s our gateway into The Infinite, the all-knowing; hence why we often feel that it is right.
Similarly, I believe that when we enter flow, we get access to the information that the subconscious mind has access to, along with our intuition. I believe we get direct information from the subconscious, which has direct access to The Infinite.
Then, we get to play with the universe in a whole new way.
For example, I think I would never be able to write these new (for me) paragraphs and concepts if I wasn’t immersed in a flow state.
I even like to believe that these words I’m writing aren’t mine, that I’m just the messenger.
But such is the power of your mind.
Practical Steps Towards Flow
Flow can only truly be achieved when we are willing to let go of the outcome and just play.
Cultivate awareness
Entering flow is always harder than maintaining flow. If there are tons of distractions nearby, you won’t ever go into flow fully.
For example, if you are writing and you always see your friend notifying your phone with messages and videos, you can’t enter flow, which means writing will take a lot more energy and willpower from you and give no reward back.
Work will feel like work.
Like every other state, flow is most easily accessed and maintained with 0 distractions. The subconscious mind can’t be clouded with feelings in the form of videos and random thoughts in the form of texts and chats.
Getting the most out of a flow state is hard and requires effort from you. But cultivate awareness and you bypass the effort it requires. Now you need significantly less effort to get to this state of awareness and you can access a flow state momentarily.
Once you’re in a state of awareness, you notice and give yourself space to listen to your intuition, talk to yourself, and decide on the next move.
Free yourself of the burden of distractions. Give yourself space to feel.
This is easier said than done of course, but I have some tips:
Focus on your breath. Notice any sounds, feelings, or smells. Try and be okay with any and every feeling, negative or positive. Focus on your ritual.
Cultivate a ritual
To get into a state of awareness more easily I recommend cultivating a ritual.
A ritual, in this case, is a series of small steps you take before you start your work.
For example: Every time I wake up, I take a shower (hot and cold to wake me up), brush my teeth, write a diary entry, and drink water. Only then do I open up my laptop and start writing.
When I start the day I often don’t feel like doing anything but after creating this ritual through trial and error I cultivate awareness more effortlessly and often enter a flow state in just a couple of minutes of writing.
But be aware: A ritual doesn’t do anything for you if you’re distracted. Being distraction-free is a crucial step towards awareness so just keep that in mind.
Let yourself breathe. Find comfort in emptiness. Create in flow.
Let go of the outcome
Counterintuitive, I know. But right either way.
The moment you put too much importance on the task at hand, you are stuck. You paralyze yourself with thoughts and prayers on how the task needs to be done flawlessly and without fail.
But of course, you will fail. Which is a very good thing. Now you can try again stronger than before.
Imperfection needs to be celebrated, failure needs to be accepted. Recognize that it doesn’t matter. You don’t need to convince yourself to believe it, you know it’s right.
It doesn’t matter.
And that, my friend, is liberating. That’s freedom. That’s flow!
After a few weeks of cultivating a ritual and entering a flow state every morning while writing, I can confidently say that I feel a lot better.
I feel more purposeful, more grateful and I’m having so much fun.
Anyway, thank you for reading today’s letter.
